Columbus – Principal Planner / Zoning Administrator

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and process applications for zoning changes, special exception uses, variances and subdivision plats.
  • Prepare staff reports; serve as Secretary for the Planning Advisory Commission.
  • Review and interpret overlay and special zoning guidelines; answer zoning inquiries.
  • Provide assistance to other staff regarding zoning and land development.
  • Research and draft ordinance amendments and development of a new comprehensive plan.
  • Meet with citizens, developers, design professionals and city staff; conduct presentations to the various boards and the City Council
  • Improve operations and work processes to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations related to zoning and subdivision administration.
  • Knoweledge of the zoning and subdivision processes.
  • Skill in effective communcation, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in leadership.
  • Ability to prepare and present reports.
  • Ability to prepare and write zoning and/or planning ordinances.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in Planning, Public Administration, Geography or other related field is required.  Master’s degree in Planning preferred; three to five years of progressively responsible related experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical Requirements

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light or heavy objects.   Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Crouching – bending body forward by bending leg, spine.
  • Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.
  • Grasping – applying pressure to object with fingers, palm.
  • Handling – picking, holding, or working with whole hand.
  • Hearing 1 – perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Hearing 2 – receive detailed information, make discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Manual Dexterity – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word
  • Visual Acuity 1 – prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 – color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Walking – on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in an office.
