SCHEDULED BOARD MEETING
March 24, 2017
Eatonton, Georgia

President Allison Slocum called the scheduled board meeting of GAZA to order at 11:02 a.m.

In attendance were President Allison Slocum, Vice-President Richard Osborne, Secretary/ Treasurer Norman Pope, board members:  Ethan Calhoun, Lisa Jackson, Mary Teter, Mike Mastrario, and Jeanne Anne Marsh.  Ken Patton, immediate past president, was also in attendance.  Jean Lord, UGA, was in attendance representing CVIOG.  Tom O’Bryant, board member, was unable to attend this meeting due to work responsibilities.

Minutes of the previous board meeting held on February 1, 2017, had been e-mailed to all in attendance.  Copies were also distributed at this meeting.  Richard Osborne made a motion, seconded by Ethan Calhoun, to adopt the minutes as written.  Unanimous approval.

Financial report was distributed to all in attendance.  Norman Pope, Secretary/Treasurer, gave a short report on income and expenses of the Association.  Ken Patton made a motion, seconded by Lisa Jackson, to approve the financial report. Unanimous approval.

Jean Lord, CVIOG from UGA, presented the board with a financial breakdown of the recently completed 2017 Winter Conference held in Athens.  Revenue generated for the conference attended by 74 participants amounted to $25,620.00 and the expenses added up to $25,961.86 which resulted in a loss of $341.86.  This loss was deducted from GAZA’s fund balance with CVIOG and reduced the fund balance to $1,543.87 as of March 17, 2017.  Mrs. Lord also presented to the board a summary of the overall conference, evaluations, and a limited number of complaints from the participants.  Overall, the conference, the sessions, and the presenters received high marks and was judged to be successful.

Under committee reports, the Scholarship Committee reported that the deadline for 2017 Betty Gecoma Scholarship applications would be May 31, 2017.  Richard Osborne gave a report on the current Georgia Legislative session and items that would be of particular interest to zoning administrators and planning officials.  The GAZA newsletter was published in December of 2016 and many thanks to Angela Rambeau, our newsletter editor, for putting out a very informative and timely publication.  Norman Pope requested the board work diligently to secure the membership goal of 190 members for 2017.

The possibility of GPA sponsoring the AICP certification program was again discussed.  Richard Osborne had previously discussed with GPA this possibility and had been assured that no monetary responsibility on the part of GAZA would be forthcoming.  Norman Pope made a motion, seconded by Lisa Jackson, to move forward with the GPA sponsorship of the AICP program.  Unanimous approval.

The 2018 GAZA Winter Conference will be held at Lake Blackshear on February 7 – 9, 2018.  The GAZA Summer Conference for 2018 will be held at the Sea Palms Resort on St. Simons Island on August 22 – 24, 2018.  The Winter Conference in 2019 will return to UGA campus in Athens, but no date has been set at this time.

The 2017 Summer Conference will be held in Helen, Georgia, on August 23 thru August 25.  The board voted to provide a giveaway of an insulated lunch bag to each participant and instructed Treasurer Norman Pope to order 125 lunch bags.  Room rates at the Holiday Inn Express will be $109.00/night.  Sessions and speakers were determined by the board and it should be an interesting and informative conference.

With no further business to conduct, the board meeting was adjourned at 1:34 p.m.
